August is a month of transitions. It signals the start of summer winding down, the end of vacation for some, but also the beginning of the school year for many. Spring and summer projects winding down while fall and winter events are busily being planned.

At Burbank Housing, August is also a time when building projects really come into focus as construction crews that have benefited from months of dry weather and longer hours of daylight make tremendous progress on turning architectural renders into spaces where many in our community will soon call “home” and add their vibrancy to the surrounding neighborhood.

In this month’s edition of Nuts+Bolts we are excited to show off the progress at two of our affordable single-family home communities as construction there wraps up and the dream of homeownership becomes a reality to households in both Santa Rosa and Napa. We’ll also highlight a longstanding partnership between our Resident Services department and the public library, for the benefit of all in our community.

That even as the situation surrounding us remains in flux because of Covid, that progress is being made on all fronts to bring our communities back safely to place of normalcy and growth, and that the staff at Burbank Housing are working tirelessly to ensure all people in our community have a safe and stable place to live.

Checking in with Resident Services

Forging partnerships with public and private organizations are a critical piece of the puzzle in providing robust and consistent access to resources for those in our communities, and our Resident Services team is best-in-class when it comes to relationship-building.

Last month Resident Services Coordinator Jacob Rich was on hand to update the Sonoma County Library Commission on the extensive partnership between Burbank Housing’s Resident Services and the Library, as well as receive a resolution from the Commission honoring Burbank Housing’s longtime and extraordinary partnership with the Library.

Among the range of resources provided to Burbank Housing communities, Resident Services coordinated and hosted library staff for STEM activities, the building of on-site Little Free Libraries and other book giveaways, literacy promotion programs, arts & crafts and much more.

Coupled with free meals, the partnership with the library seeks to nourish both mind and body! A tremendous and well-appreciated resource for the families in our communities.

Updates from Burbank Housing's Development Team

August marks the end of a long road for Burbank Housing’s Development and Homeownership teams as two new affordable single-family homeownership projects wrap up construction and families receive the keys to their first home.

In Santa Rosa, Burbank Leadership along with public officials and financial partners ted the site of Lantana Homes, a 48-unit single-family home community located at 2979 Dutton Meadow in southwest Santa Rosa.

Construction is nearly complete at Lantana which will welcome its 48 households, totaling 175 people, later this month during its Homeowner Key Ceremony. We can’t wait for these families to begin the next phase of their lives here!

New beginnings were already happening however at Redwood Grove, another Burbank Housing single-family homeownership project in Napa.

Redwood Grove’s site tour for public officials took place in late July, with the Homeowner Key Ceremony taking place on Saturday, July 31st.

34 households, totaling 125 people, gathered to sign the final documents, share some cake & tears of joy, but most importantly pick up the keys to their new home. The sense of real joy and imagining future possibilities was palpable as families beamed with excitement at finally being able to move into their new community.

These projects are a huge win not only for the cities of Santa Rosa and Napa, but Burbank Housing’s Homeownership team as well. When keys are finally handed out at Lantana at the end of this month, it will signal the closing on 82 homes in the span of a month—a huge feat even for organizations many times the size of Burbank Housing, and only goes to highlight the amount of dedication and hard work that we bring to bear on the issue of affordable housing in our communities.
